I have somewhat of a MESS! Purchased a Dell Latitude Laptop on-line which was supposed to have Windows 7 Pro. When received it actually had 7 Home Premium. Found I had problems with running some XP programs and finally got the seller to send me an authentic Dell 'Reinstallation DVD Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit' disc and COA and product key. My concern - since these are BOTH OEM versions of the OS and the new disc is a 'reinstall' rather than an 'upgrade' - is this going to reformat my hard drive and wipe out all my drivers and pre-installed factory programs?
Dell installs a number of vital programs to run the webcam, audio, diagnostics, data safe backup, etc., plus all necessary hardware drivers, but they don't send disc copies. How do I save all of that? And then, what all would I have to copy off the system to be able to reinstall programs? Seems an almost impossible process. Does an OEM 'reinstall' disk give you an option to just replace the OS and leave everything else alone?
I certainly don't want to start without knowing what I'm getting into. Would certainly appreciate any help. Thanks for your quick reply. I'm a bit nervous due to all the issues I've had with this laptop - so just one more question for confirmation - If I buy an upgrade key for 7 Pro AND use the Anytime Upgrade wizard, it WILL NOT reformat my hard drive? That is correct, see how it works: When I'm done, the drivers for all my hardware and the programs installed and my data will still be there and accessible under the new OS?
Nancy That is correct. Best, Andre Windows Insider MVP MVP-Windows and Devices for IT twitter/adacosta groovypost.com.
